Shawan and The Wonton

Soul Songstress, Shawan Rice, invites the crowd into her world with her poetic lyrics and haunting melodies. Drawing inspiration from her Life experiences ranging from; Love, Loss, Grief and acceptance, concertgoers easily connect to her sound and story. The vulnerable and transparent nature of her approach to music leaves the listener with an experience like no other.

"Shawan Rice's bluesy voice makes her sound older than she is, and it’s earned the 21-year-old from Harrisburg comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday. “Maybe I just have an old soul, and I’ve been here for, like, quite a few lifetimes,” said Rice, who also plays guitar, “and I’m just … here doing what I’m supposed to be doing, which is just ... sharing some love, and … sending some healing vibes through some … tunes.””

“I came away from this finding Shawan to be very open and optimistic, more than most folks, even artists. That has translated to her music, wherever she ends up. "I've had a lot of interesting experiences in my life," she says. "If we share these experiences w/each other, we feel a little better about it...being transparent and sharing whatever it is I feel with others so they can feel free whatever it is they'd like to share."”

“When a performer has a voice like the one Rice is able to project, it makes it that much easier to be able to connect on a personal level with an audience. Several vocalists immediately come to mind – well-know singers like Amy Winehouse (who Rice admits is her biggest influence), Alicia Keys and Billie Holiday. Her sound also harkens to the days of the 1960s rock scene, drawing inspiration from bands like The Doors and Pink Floyd. More recent singers are with her too, like the imperfect voice mixed with the poetic lyrics of Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes.”

Mark DeRose

“Thoughtful and provocative, laden with metaphors of hope and celebration for life. It’s the stuff that makes feel good music feel so good”.- Patrick Kirchner, The Fly Magazine. DeRose has opened for national touring artists Rusted Root, Gin Blossoms, Michelle Branch, Edwin McCain, Blues Traveler, The Sugar Hill Gang and Josh Kelley. As well he performed as part of an NFL halftime show for the Baltimore Ravens and his music has been featured for use on daytime television.

Along with his band, The Dreadnought Brigade, DeRose’s music calls upon his love for rootsy blue-eyed soul and classic rock of the late 60s and 70s. The band brings high-energy performances of DeRose’s upbeat, feel good music to stages across the tri-state region. However, they’re just as happy to leave the amps at home and bring the same positive energy to acoustic settings, listening rooms, and house concerts. For fans of Van Morrison, Counting Crows, and The Band.
